Ethos
Another appeal that was used was ethos. Ethos was used when the narrator
was telling us that it was our fault and that we were depleting the environment.
This makes us think that we have to do something because it’s our fault. By
the narrator telling us that it is our faults, we immediately believe that ethically
we should help repair what we have done.
Logos
The director also used Logos to support his argument. Logos was presented
by statistics. Throughout the documentary, many statistics were presented
that related to how our actions were affecting the world and coming back to
hurt us.
Pathos
Many pathos appeals were used because the can manipulate our emotions.
Pathos was used by showing many beautiful, stunning pictures of our earth and
places that we have probably never seen before. This is pathos because
these photos manipulated our emotions as they make us want to try harder to
save our planet which is also another underlying message (throughout the
whole documentary there are clips). Another way Pathos was demonstrated was
the music. The music changed a lot throughout the documentary. When the video
was showing footage of the beauty of this planet the music was calm and relaxing
to almost bring you into the movie then as it showed the human power plants,
agriculture machines and overcrowded farms the music became stronger and scarier.
This played with our emotions because it took us on a roller coaster. Finally Pathos
was also used in the word choices of the narrator for example they told us that the
farms nowadays resemble the human concentration camps from World War II.This
is only one example of how the word choice is pathos. Obviously this example is a
powerful one because it makes an image in your head and makes you remember
everything that happened back then.
