Impacts - High Provoked by Film Techniques
The impacts brought forward in tehdocumetary HOME are very much dependent on
the film techniques and use of voice and music use.
The music was light and cheery when the narrator discussed the land and its beauty
but when the footage showed the industries and the bad side of humans the music
became more aggressive and scary. This evidently supports the director’s message
because it shows that we as humans are doing bad, aggressive things that are
harming our land. This impacts the documentary because it makes our emotions go
on a roller coaster. When the music is calm, it makes us feel like we are there but
when the music is strong and aggressive it makes us scared and mad. In addition
another film technique that was used was the animated aerial shots showing the
changes in the formation of the land and configurationof the world. This supports the
director’s argument because it shows us that our actions again are affecting our world
negatively.
One example of this was when they were taking about how the increase in water levels
will cause some of the cities to disappear. This impacts you in the way that you want to
try and stop it because you don’t want to lose land that people are living on.
Another film technique is the use of colour in the footage. When the film was happy and
showing the beauty the colours were very vivid but when the footage was more
depressing, the colours were darker. This supports the message because the darker
colors show us what we are doing wrong and the vivid colours showed us what we had
and have still. This technique affects you in the same way as the others. Finally the last
technique was the repetition at the end of the documentary.
The narrator kept saying “It’s too late to be pessimist” and “I’ve seen…” This was a good
technique because it repeats different examples with the same message to make sure
we understand.
The director’s message was supported here because the narrator was saying that it’s too
late to do some things but we can still do something. This technique also allowed the film
to end on a positive note as the narrator was focusing on what we have done like the
windmills and green energy. This repetition impacts you because you want to continue to
do things to help our planet.
